What does it mean to abandon? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “to abandon means to give up to the control or influence of another person or agent with the intent of never again claiming a right or interest again.” That’s a perfect description of what our relationship with God is supposed to be like. God calls us to give control of our lives over to Him with no intention of asserting a right to self rule again.
Following Jesus means that instead of running after the fleeting charms of this world, we abandon our own impulses and desires in order to pursue His. We abandon our fame for His glory. We abandon our comfort for His mission. We abandon our rights for His Lordship. We abandon our greed for His provision. We abandon our dreams for His plan. We abandon our goals for His purpose. We abandon our pride for His glory. We abandon our sin for His holiness. We abandon our self-righteousness for His forgiveness. In essence, we abandon ourselves so that we can have Him.
It’s time for us to worship Him with reckless abandonment. Anything else isn’t really worship at all.
