There is something in the heart of every true Christian that longs to be near to God. We have come to realize that there is a “hole” in our hearts which only God can fill. That longing doesn’t go away. We may dull the ache for God that we feel inside by pursuing the short-lived pleasures of this present world, but we can never escape the emptiness of a life lived for wealth, pleasure, or comfort. There is a part of us that knows there must be something that gives meaning to this life and hope for eternity. It is this longing that drives us to our knees and causes us to seek the presence of our Creator.
James offers a prescription for all who long to be near to God. He says, “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” God has already cleared the pathway through Jesus’ sacrifice. The next step is up to you. The prodigal son had to initiate his journey home before his father could rush out to meet him with joy. Take a step toward God today. Draw near to him and he will draw near to you.
